Hwange magistrate Lindiwe Maphosa, on the 26th of August 2014, sentenced John Makhina, a Zambian poacher to 10 years in prison with labour. Makhina appeared before prosecutor Tomupei Mbiza facing charges of unlawful possession of tusks, violation of the immigration act and illegal possession of a 375 rifle.

Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority Public Relations Manager, Caroline Washaya-Moyo, says John Makhina was arrested on the 22nd of February where he was being accused of hunting illegally. 37 tusks weighing 567 kilogrammes were later recovered. The tusks are valued at US$141 750.00

Meanwhile the two accused persons, Namatayi Ndlovu, aged 30 and Calvin Murapata, aged 22 who were facing charges of contravening the Environmental Management Act after being found in illegal possession of 300 grammes of cyanide, have been remanded in custody. They are set to return to court on the 27th of August 2014.
