OFFICIAL HANDOVER CEREMONY OF BOATS

“I think this one should be deployed to Kariba” the Director General of the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority Mr. V Chadenga seems to be saying to the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Management Cde F.D.C Nhema.

Ladies and Gentlemen. As you may be aware boats are critical equipment in patrolling water bodies as are 4 x 4 vehicles in ground patrols. However, the Parks and Wildlife Management Authority has  for a long time been facing a critical shortage of boats to effectively police and monitor all water bodies under its jurisdiction such as the Zambezi River stretching from Kazungula to Kanyemba and other national water bodies which include the following Lakes, Manyame, Chivero, Mutirikwi, Cunningham and Manjirenji.

The critical shortage of boats resulted in a reduced law enforcement effort to protect the authority‘s aquatic resources and to deter poaching activities in and around these areas. Furthermore, the authority’s revenue collection capacity is heavily compromised.    However the donation which has come at the most opportune, time will go a long way in assisting to boost the capacity and morale of the authority’s field staff. Not only will the donation be used for anti-poaching activities but it will come in handy during the authority’s aquatic research such as fish stock assessment, hippo and crocodile surveys as well as pollution monitoring.

Parks Board chairman Mr. Pangeti                                                             Mr. Lobel delivering his remarks.

It is without doubt that the two boats will help in carrying out fisheries surveys as well as conduct fish assessments in rural dams in support of the growing aquaculture industry. Mr. Lobel; I am reliably informed that the two boats will immediately be deployed to Lake Kariba Recreational Park and Zambezi National Park. Ladies and gentlemen allow me to express my sincere gratitude to Mr. Lobel for this invaluable donation to the authority.

I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to Ambassador Chidyausiku for facilitating the donation. Let me assure all of you that the boats will be put to good use and will also be maintained constantly.
