George Mathe, Wailos Mungombe, Kudakwashe Goredema and Willas Mukande were on patrol at the Kazuma Pan National Park at the border with Botswana when they allegedly strayed into foregn land while tracking human spoor. The four were arrested by Botswana Defense Forces soldiers patrolling the boarder. The Authority meanwhile is in constant contact with its counterparts in Botswana.
Initially the authorities in Botswana promised to release the four on Saturday but when our officers arrived there the goal posts changed and we were told to bring proof of their employment with Parks and registration for the rifles which we did.
The goal posts changed again and they appeared in the magistrates courts where they were remanded in custody to March 28, 2011.
Meanwhile the four appeared in Botswana Court on the 28th of March and were again remanded in custody to the 5th of April 2011.
Early last year, five Botswana rangers were arrested and detained for straying into Zimbabwe. |
